Meditation: A way of boosting health, intelligence, and a whole host of other benefits in as little as 25 minutes.

Mindfulness is a basic human quality, a way of learning to pay attention to whatever is happening in your life that allows you a greater sense of connection to your life inwardly and outwardly.
For thousands of years’ people have used meditation and mindfulness to move beyond the mind’s stress-inducing thoughts and emotional upsets into the peace and clarity of present moment awareness.
In the context of your health, mindful meditation is a way for you to experientially learn to take better care of yourself by exploring and understanding the interplay of mind and body and mobilizing your own inner resources for coping, growing, and healing.
The courses that we offer are rooted in the Zen tradition that has a long and distinguished history of practices for boosting physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as for grounding, insight and self-understanding.

Here are the Core Sessions to Help You Create Your Own Mindfulness Practice

WEEK 1: ORIENTATION

We start with an overview of the course and establish how you can learn to adopt Mindfulness as a daily practice. We begin with the Body Scan Meditation – a practice which helps us pay attention to the various sensations in the body, making us more aware of ourselves in the present moment. Each participant is given an online, private journal and encouraged to record their experiences throughout the course duration, so they will have a record for themselves of the benefits and power of accumulative meditation.

WEEK 2: STRESS
Meditation and mindfulness help us develop our inner resources in two main ways: (1) providing an oasis of calm and relaxation which speeds up recuperation; (2) increasing awareness of how we feel and dissipating tension. This week, we focus on transformational coping strategies that open the door to accessing this inner resource, and we learn how to incorporate this awareness into moment by moment mindful living – mindfully walking, eating, breathing, etc.

WEEK 3: PHYSICAL PAIN
When we’re in pain, we want it to go away. Immediately! The last thing we want to do is pay more mindful attention to it… In this session, we explore the tune-in and tune-out approach when dealing with pain, as a way of letting go the associated mental commentary that arises. The more we practise these techniques in meditation, the stronger our immune system is and we have an increased capacity for focus, attention, memory and concentration.

WEEK 4: EMOTIONAL STRESS, ANXIETY & DEPRESSION
‘That which sees suffering is not itself suffering’ – Obaku.
In this session, we learn how to apply mindfulness at the critical moment when experiencing a painful physical sensation, intense emotion or condition. This approach has proven equally effective in helping many deal with very strong states, such as fear or depression. With a greater ability to regulate our emotions, we find ourselves able to feel more tolerance and compassion towards those who are less mindfully aware.

WEEK 5: ROLE STRESS & TIME PRESSURE
Time pressure (or lack of) can have a stressful impact on our life and yet through our meditative practice, we can access a state of flow where there is no worry and where ‘time flies and the ego falls away’ – Csikszentmihalya. In this state of flow, we can learn to dis-identify with the various roles we play in life, so that we don’t become stuck behind the masks we construct about ourselves. Mindfulness helps to increase our self-confidence and ability to be more compassionately assertive, thereby enhancing our self esteem.

WEEK 6: TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF
Your life is the creation of your mind.” – Buddha
Mindfulness and meditation helps to develop awareness and resilience so that we can cope better with life’s adversities. It also helps us to see more clearly those things which nourish and energise us, and those things which deplete us and make us feel less than we really are. In this session, we build on the foundation of practice so far to look at ways in which we can individually expand our mindfulness into other areas of our life so that we are consciously and actively experiencing greater vitality and more enthusiasm for our daily existence.

WEEK 7: ELEVATED FUNCTION
“After regularly practicing meditation for 5 years you are physiologically 12 years younger than a non-meditator” –
Research shows that meditation improves attention, concentration and clarity of the mind; enhances creativity and problem-solving skills; increases self-esteem; increases empathy; delays the aging process; and may even boost IQ. To good to be true? In this week’s session, we look at some of the scientific validation surrounding these areas and introduce the profound practice of Living in Presence, the state of awareness that produces all of these benefits.

WEEK 8: CHANGING YOUR LIFE
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson”
By week 8, you will have been meditating for 49 consecutive days and be well on the way to making meditation part of your life. In this final week of the course, we review everything we’ve learned and any questions that may have arisen, with an emphasis on how you can now continue to carry the momentum forward in the coming months and years. We discuss the resources, practices and further support systems available that will help you further integrate, learn, and grow. We end by sharing the deep meditative practice of X, which if adopted as a daily practice will nurture and enhance the power of all the techniques offered on this course.

Reawaken to What You Already Are

Mindfulness is not something that you have to “get” or acquire. It is already within you—a deep internal resource available and patiently waiting to be released and used in the service of learning, growing, and healing. While the practices have been adapted from classical Buddhist meditation and yoga traditions, MBSR is a secular, scientifically-informed approach that operates in harmony with any belief system or spiritual background.
MBSR has benefited people with the following:

Stress
—from work, school, family, finances, illness, aging, grief, uncertainty about the future, and feeling “out of control”

Prevention and wellness
—including health enhancement and wellness focused on prevention and learning the “how” of taking good care of yourself and feeling a greater sense of resilience and balance

Medical conditions
—including chronic illness or pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, asthma, GI distress, skin disorders, headaches, and many other conditions

Psychological distress
—including anxiety, panic, depression, fatigue, and sleep disturbances

Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life, a way of taking charge of your life, a way of consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life.

In contrast, you’ve probably encountered moments of “mindlessness”—a loss of awareness resulting in forgetfulness, separation from self, and a sense of living mechanically.

Restoring within yourself a balanced sense of health and well-being requires increased awareness of all aspects of self, including body and mind, heart and soul. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is intended to ignite this inner capacity and infuse your life with awareness.
